North Huron, ON – Overnight, the area received rainfall that exceeded a 100 year event. As the excessive water moves through the Maitland watershed there will be potential for flooding in the area. North Huron Emergency Control Group had a conference call with Maitland Valley Conservation Authority this afternoon and we were advised of a potential failure of the Gorrie Dam that could affect all municipalities downstream. Maitland Valley has provided mapping of the potential impact of this downstream surge and North Huron is taking steps to notify the approximately 150 property owners that may be affected.
North Huron is taking all precautionary measures to protect our citizens, Fire Department North Huron, Wingham Police Service, Public Works and Facilities departments are working to put plans in place to assist residents in the event that flooding conditions escalate.
North Huron is advising that all areas along the river, including parks and trails will be closed until noon on Saturday, June 24.
North Huron will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep residents notified as conditions change. Updates will posted to the North Huron website and CKNX radio.
