For Immediate Release
Monday, May 7, 2012

Last Friday North Huron Council and senior staff met with Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson to discuss issues and challenges facing the municipality and ways that Lisa can effectively represent North Huron’s interests at Queen’s Park.

The following is a list of many of the issues discussed:

  • the need for additional infrastructure funding and other programs to improve
    the financial sustainability of municipalities
  • reductions in the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) transfers
  • possible impact of Drummond Report recommendations on municipalities
  • the need for the province to use a rural lens to evaluate programs before they’re implemented
  • impact of the province’s full-day kindergarten program on municipally owned and operated child care services
  • amalgamations, water and wastewater regulations, physician recruitment costs, rural severances, joint and several liability, hospital redevelopment funding, airport, Emergency Services Training Centre, alternative energy sources, downtown revitalization programs, and funding for arts and culture

“We need the provincial government to understand and respond to the specific issues and challenges facing North Huron and other small rural municipalities,” said Reeve Neil Vincent.  “I know Lisa will continue to raise our concerns in the Ontario Legislature as well as promote  North Huron’s strengths and opportunities with key Ministers and decision-makers.”
