The Township of North Huron welcomes the opportunity for residents to submit proposed street names for any public or private streets within the municipal boundaries of the Corporation of the Township of North Huron.
The function of municipal street naming is to enable people and emergency services to locate properties readily. In order to provide for orderly growth within the Township, a uniform system to assign street names, as established by the Township accomplishes this objective. In 2020, North Huron Council adopted the Street Naming Policy which provides procedures for the selection and assignment of street names within the Township of North Huron. The Policy has been established to ensure that the Township's heritage, culture, and regional and cultural significance is considered in the naming of streets.
In order for a potential street name to be considered, it must meet at least one of the following criteria:- The name must have historical significance;
- The name must be associated with the Township’s heritage;
- The name must be culturally or regionally significant;
- The name must recognize wildlife, flora, fauna or natural features that are unique to the Township; or
- The name must pay homage to a resident that lost their life while in service with the Canadian Armed Forces .
The County of Huron Emergency Services tests the preferred names initially selected by Council to ensure the possible names meet the County's criteria being:
- there is no duplication or similarity to other street names within the County of Huron or neighbouring communities;
- that the preferred names are considered to have ease of pronunciation and spelling; and
- that the street names do not contain symbols or acronyms.
The Council of the Township of North Huron has the final decision on the street name to be used.
Those interested in contributing meaningful street names to be included on the Township's Master Reserve Street Name List can submit their recommendations using the online form.
