The Township of North Huron understands the need to recognize and embrace the principles of Truth and Reconciliation with Canada's Indigenous population, as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.
Adopting an Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Statement showcases the Township's respect, recognition and appreciation of Indigenous peoples, practices and ways of knowing. When a land acknowledgement statement is being given, it is an opportunity for North Huron Council and staff to reflect, be present and pause to consider the impact and change in their work. The Township of North Huron has chosen two statements that are encouraged to be used to reflect. Prior to the adoption of the chosen statements, the Township consulted with local First Nations communities and received feedback on the development of the land acknowledgement statements chosen.
The appropriate Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Statements are as follows:
- "We [I] would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki, Odawa and Mississauga Peoples."
- "The Township of North Huron would like to begin by acknowledging that we are situated on Treaty 29 and Treaty 45 1/2 territory and the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki, Odawa and Mississauga Peoples. For this, we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land."
It is at the discretion of Council and staff which of the Township of North Huron's Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Statements is chosen to be recited. It is encouraged be recited in the following circumstances:
- Council and Committee Meetings
- Corporate Documents
- North Huron Special Events
