Fireworks are discharged around the Township of North Huron to celebrate various events. North Huron has legislated for the safe use of fireworks through the Township of North Huron Sale and Discharge of Fireworks By-law. This by-law regulates the sale and setting off fireworks in the Township of North Huron and states that fireworks may only be sold and discharged on specific days throughout the year.
Please note, anyone wishing to have an event involving fireworks beyond the dates specified in the Township of North Huron Sale and Discharge of Fireworks By-law must apply for a permit. Additionally, anyone wishing to discharge display fireworks within the Township of North Huron (even on authorized days) must also apply for a permit.

In accordance with the Township of North Huron Sale and Discharge of Fireworks By-law, fireworks are only permitted to be sold within the Township of North Huron on the following dates:
- The seven (7) days before and on the third (3rd) Monday of the month of May of each year, being Victoria Day;
- The seven (7) days before and on the 1st day of July of each year, being Canada Day;
- The seven (7) days before and on the 1st Monday of August of each year, being the Civic Holiday;
- The seven (7) days before and on the 1st Monday of September of each year, being Labour Day, and;
- The Seven (7) days before and on December 31st of each year, being New Year’s Eve Day
Please note that it is not permitted at any time to sell or possess firecrackers or prohibited fireworks. It is also not permitted to sell or give to any person under the age of 18 any type of consumer or display fireworks.
In accordance with the Township of North Huron Sale and Discharge of Fireworks By-law, fireworks are only permitted to be set off by a person or corporation within the Township of North Huron on the following dates:
- Victoria Day
- Canada Day
- Civic Holiday
- Labour Day
- New Years Eve Day
- On the date of any community functions as approved by the Council of the Township of North Huron.
No person or group is authorized to discharge display fireworks in the Township of North Huron without first having obtained a permit to do so from the Council of the Township of North Huron. Additionally, to have an event involving fireworks beyond the dates specified in the Township of North Huron Sale and Discharge of Fireworks By-law, a permit is required. To obtain a permit, an application is required.
Every application for a permit must be submitted to the Council of the Township of North Huron a minimum of twenty-one calendar days prior to the date of the proposed discharge of fireworks. All completed fireworks permit applications can be submitted to the Clerk’s Department through one of the following methods:
- By email to the Clerk's Department
- In person at the Municipal Office at 274 Josephine Street, Wingham, ON N0G 2W0; or
- By regular mail to P.O. Box 90, 274 Josephine Street, Wingham, ON N0G 2W0.
Please note that all permit applications for display fireworks are required to be submitted by the Fireworks Supervisor and must also include the following:
- A description of the event including
- The date and time of the proposed discharge of display fireworks
- The type and kind of display fireworks that may be discharged
- The discharge techniques to be used
- The manner and means of restraining unauthorized persons from attending too near to the discharge site
- The manner in which unused display fireworks will be disposed of
- The number of authorized persons on site during the event to handle and discharge the display of fireworks
- A site plan providing a description of the discharge site to be used for the discharging of display fireworks
- A description of the fire emergency procedures
- The name and address of the applicant (Fireworks Supervisor) and the sponsoring organization, if applicable
- Proof of certification of the applicant as a Fireworks Supervisor
- Proof of consent of the owner of the property for the discharge of display fireworks, in writing
- A permit fee as set out in the North Huron Fees and Charges By-law
- Proof of insurance and indemnification of not less than five million dollars ($5,000,000.00) in the name of the applicant and naming the Township of North Huron as an additional insured.
