North Huron Council Approves 2024 Fees and Charges
NORTH HURON, ON (November 22, 2023) – Following discussion and deliberation, the Council of the Township of North Huron has approved the 2024 Fees and Charges By-law at their meeting on November 20, 2023. The approved 2024 Fees and Charges By-law includes two changes to the originally proposed Recreation Fees (Schedule G).
The first change includes replacement of the complete membership package with a basic membership package. The basic package includes use of multiple areas of the facility, including open swim/lane swim, use of the fitness centre, use of the courts, and public skating. Registration for recreation programs will now be a separate cost for users. The cost for the basic package membership is 25% more than the cost of the 2023 complete membership package.
The second approved change is to phase in the originally proposed increases to the recreation registration fees for aquafit memberships, swim memberships, fitness memberships, court rentals, and youth ice rentals over a two period to reduce the impact of users. Seventy percent (70%) of the originally proposed increase will occur in 2024 and the remaining thirty percent (30%) will occur in 2025.
“In order for our municipality to find a balance between user fee costs and the impact that it has on our tax base, it is necessary for our facilities, services, and programs to operate on more of a cost recovery basis. The approved 2024 fees and charges lessens the burden on North Huron ratepayers,” says Reeve Heffer. “The Township of North Huron values the users of our recreation facilities and through this process, Council received significant feedback from our users. This is why we decided to implement a basic package membership, as well as phase in the increase to aquafit memberships, swim memberships, fitness memberships, court rentals, and youth ice. To clarify, there is not a 70% increase to the fees in these five areas from 2023, but instead only 70% of the originally proposed fee increase is being implemented in 2024.”
EXAMPLE
The total fee for an “Individual All Ages – One (1) Day Pass” for Aquafit will be $7.00 as of January 1, 2024 as opposed to the originally proposed $10.00. The remaining $3.00 will be implemented in 2025.
