Steps to become an Instructor/Lifeguard
The Lifesaving Society's training programs provide knowledge and skills for people to save themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. The courses below are the steps and the pre-requisites required to become an Instructor Lifeguard. A Lifeguard gains life skills such as communication, conflict resolution, responsibility and team work. If you have any questions about advanced courses please call (519) 357-1208 ext. 323.

Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid/CPR B |
Challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Course offered in Fall session. Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification (need not be current). |
Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid/CPR C |
Begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates will learn to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities with emphasis on teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Course offered in Fall session. Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion and Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR C certifications (need not be current) |
Lifesaving Society Assistant Swim Instructor |
Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching while they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. Course offered in Winter session. Prerequisites: 14 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross or higher certification (need not be current). |
Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor |
This course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques. Course offered in Winter session. Prerequisites: 15 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross certification (need not be current). |
Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard |
National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country and is recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public swimming pools. Course offered in Spring session. Prerequisites: Minimum 15 years of age, Bronze Cross, and Standard First Aid with CPR C certifications (need not be current) |
Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Recert |
To remain current in their qualifications, lifeguards are legally required to re-certify their qualifications every two years. This clinic will update lifeguards on the latest developments in training techniques and statistical research. Course offered in Spring session. |
Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid/CPR C Recert |
To remain current in their qualifications, general workplaces require a recertification every 3 years. Aquatic staff may be require a recertification more frequently. Course offered twice per year, Spring and Fall sessions. |
Important Information for Advanced Courses |
Please check course pre-requisites before registering. 100% Attendance and participation is required for all Advanced Courses. Exceptions cannot be made. What to bring to all courses: original certification of required pre-requisites, proof of age, bathing suit and towels(s). Recommended for all courses: comfortable clothing, notebook, pen/pencils, snacks/meals and water bottle. Course manuals and materials will be handed out on the first day of the course. |
Registration for Advanced Courses can be completed in-person at the North Huron Recreation Office, 99 Kerr Drive, Wingham or by calling 519-357-1208 Ext. 321. Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
