Becoming a Firefighter
Training is an essential part of being an effective firefighter and is required to meet legislative regulations. Regular training nights are held weekly with the occasional specialty training session from time to time. In addition to emergency responses and training, firefighters also participate in public relations activities and fundraising events. To be considered a candidate for a firefighter, applicants must live in close proximity to the station they are wishing to join. Firefighters are required to carry a pager and be on call and available to respond to incidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Being a firefighter requires a significant commitment from candidates. Firefighter job skills include:
- Must be a team player, be able to take direction and follow the Chain of Command.
- Wears personal protective equipment as required for safety and follows all health and safety guidelines as required under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Must not be claustrophobic and shall be able to work in confined spaces and use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Capable of working from heights while standing on ladders and lifting heavy equipment.
- Lays and connects hose, directs water streams under the direction of the Company Officer.
- Searches for and rescues persons in danger and administers medical aid as needed to the injured.
- Ventilates premises to release heat and smoke and conducts salvage operations to prevent property damage.
- Able to work in prolonged and demanding situations under adverse conditions.
- Ability to react quickly and remain calm under pressure and strain.
- Should be in relatively good physical condition to perform duties as required.
- Able to operate a variety of firefighting equipment and apparatus with a strong mechanical aptitude.
- Capable of handling critical incident stress and medical emergencies.
- Follow the Fire Department Best Practices.
- Clean equipment, apparatus and equipment checks to ensure operational and ready for the next call.
- Attends regular practice and participates in all training activities.
- Hold a valid driver's license and willing to obtain a class DZ license (at own expense) if don't already have.
