Controlled Burn Regulations and Procedures
As per the 2015 Ontario Fire Code, Section 2.4.4.4. (1) Open air burning shall not take place unless;
- It has been approved, or
- The open air burning consist of a small, confined fire that is
(i) used to cook food on a grill, barbecue or spit,
(ii) commensurate with the type and quantity of food being cooked, and
(iii) supervised at all times
Approval to burn in rural areas of North Huron is normally granted subject to the following conditions:
- Report your controlled burn by completing our Burn Permit Application Form or by calling 226-523-9500 (option 7) and follow the instructions
- Please give 1 to 2 hours after completing the online burn permit application or leaving a phone message before beginning your burn
- The fire must be attended at all times by a competent person with a means to extinguish the fire if required
- Be considerate of your neighbours, no one likes the smell of smoke or obnoxious odours coming in their home. If complaints are received, you will be asked to extinguish your fire.
- Do not burn after dark
- If the wind conditions are wrong for a burn, plan for another day
- If the smoke is impeding on any roadway, please extinguish
- Avoid burning in periods of extreme dryness when grass and brush can accelerate a fire rapidly out of control
- Absolutely no burning allowed during a burn ban
- Burning materials that are environmentally harmful such as garbage, tires, treated wood and petroleum-based products like plastic and asphalt shingles is NOT permitted
If the Fire Department is called and any one of the above regulations are not being followed, they have been instructed to extinguish the fire and you may receive an invoice for those services. The Fire Department is not liable for any damages by giving permission to burn. The owner of the property must take full responsibility.
